Byzantine Marsh Frog

The Morgan catalogue identifies a frog on folio 318v of its tenth-century Dioscorides manuscript, made in Constantinople. The accompanying Greek inscription names the animal. It belongs to a medical text; identifying a modern frog species or assigning it a fixed symbolic meaning would go beyond the evidence.
